My first time doing a Vader piece in about...ever. I always used to draw him as a kid and was always in awe of the costume design. That mask with the roundness on top but all jaggedly menacing in the face. The unapologetic black of the suit with the red lightsaber always fascinated me. With this drawing I wanted to put Vader in a pose you rarely see him in: exaggerated action. He's always so stiff in most drawings or pictures. I figure if he's such a badass he's gotta be fast, too. This is obviously samurai flick inspired.
This was done on a Bristol board using Speedball nibs and paint. For years I've strictly been a pen guy, but the nibs definitely create better blacks. I was afraid to experiment with the nibs on this illustration but now I can't wait to use them again. For the grays of the suit I watered down the ink.
